Josephs Baur Brewing Company Stockyard Oatmeal Stout

This Stockyard Oatmeal Stout is from Josephs Baur Brewing Company in San Jose, California. Josephs Baur Brewing Company Trader Joe’s beer brewing operation. This ber is 5.2% ABV. This is in the traditional Irish Stout style. This Stout pours black with a two-finger beige head that fizzes away quickly. The aroma is sweet, with coffee, roasted notes, and malts. The flavor is similar to the aroma. There are flavors of light coffee, sweetness, roasted malts, and a weird ash-like taste. Yes, I know what ash tastes like. This beer is medium on the mouth. Then it comes to a semi-sweet and light roasted finish. The aftertaste is okay. It is roasted malt there. I’ve had better Oatmeal Stouts than this Stockyard. Samual Smith Oatmeal Stout is way better than this. This Stockyard Oatmeal Stout is a D+. I did finish this beer but I didn’t think is was great. It’s a boring light on flavor type of oatmeal stout. I really didn’t feel much of the oats on this stout. I would not drink this. Please stay safe, be kind to each other, and remember to enjoy responsibly! Cheers!

  1. I guess it depends on your palate, Evan. I have been drinking porters and stouts for years and rate Stockyard Oatmeal Stout as one of the better stouts I’ve tasted.

  2. I don’t know if anything has changed in the approximately 2-years since I purchased this brew. That said, I just got a sixer in Dec. ’24 and I’ve got to say I’m really pleased. I do not remember it being so well done previously and as it stands presently I must say it is a really good spot-on example of what I feel this type of beer should be. Dark and chocolatey malt dominates with a bit of possibly cherry and a properly balanced hoppiness. As it is only available currently in cans it is a must to pour into a glass letting it airiate about a minute. After a minute it will display a perfect head and you will have to properly rinse your glass afterwards as the lacing will remain from top to bottom in the glass. Excellent mouthfeel as expected from the lacing, not watery like the Left Hand Nitro version of this type- which makes that one a fail even if what carbonation there is in the Left Hand is said to be of smaller bubbles (sounds like marketing gibberish and is). Since I can no longer get my favorite dark beer, Anchor Steam Porter, this is my new go-to hands-down favorite beer.
